Private Charles A. Richards; Paducah, Kentucky; Born in Kentucky November 15, 1888; Son of Robert and Alice Richards; Entered Service June 28, 1917. Trained at Paris Islands, S. C.; Landed in France February, 1918, where he received five weeks training for front line service. Entered trenches March 20, 1918 in Verdun sector with 2nd Division, 4th Brigade, 5th Regiment Marines. Remained on front line duty for six months under sound of heavy artillery, with exception of about 10 days rest. The 4th Marine Brigade was given credit for retiring three of Germany's crack shock troop divisions and was awarded the French War Cross for stopping the drive on Paris and taking the Woods of Belleau.
