Items found here pertain to Franklin School which was located in Paducah, KY, during the mid to late 20th Century. The history of Franklin School in Paducah (KY) reaches back into the 19th century, with the name being used in Zorn’s City Directory in 1895. Before this time, schools in Paducah were identified by their location--first district, second district, and so on. At the time, Franklin School served the fourth district as an elementary school with a building at the corner of Sixth and George Streets. Its principal was Philander McHenry, and the directory said 203 pupils were enrolled there. Move forward a couple of decades to 1927, when Franklin Elementary was on South Sixth Street, and a new school—Franklin Junior High—had been added to the campus. Both Franklin Elementary and Franklin Junior High served the southside of Paducah from this site until the 1960s. The 1963-64 school year was the last one for Franklin Elementary, and the ninth graders graduating in 1964 were the last from Franklin Junior High. The newer Franklin building was renamed D.T. Cooper Elementary the next year, later becoming Cooper-Whiteside Elementary in 1993. As the school-age population shifted, the Franklin building became the home of Paducah’s Head Start and Choices, the alternative school. The alternative school moved from the Franklin building and was followed several years later by Head Start which left for a new stand-alone facility next to Paducah Tilghman High School in 2023.
