The first photograph is of individuals walking across the iced Ohio River near Owens Island at Paducah, KY. Notice the paddlewheel in the lower right corner. The second photograph is of the sternwheeler RAPIDS (Way #4686) sinking in the ice at the Paducah Marine Ways during Dec. of 1917. According to Way's Directory, 1848-1983, the RAPIDS, a sternwheeler packet boat with a wooden hull (134.8 x 28.4 x 4.5) was built in 1905 in Grand Rapids, MI. She ran Grand Rapids-Grand Haven and Memphis-Arkansas River. Capt. Fred McCandless ran in her in Cairo-Paducah trade during 1914 and in 1915 , Capt. Peter Wilton, master and Lee Rohdes, clerk in the Cairo-Paducah trade. On December 12, 1917 she was lost in the ice at Paducah, KY as pictured here. Her machinery was used in the Paducah built, H.G. Hill. Also in this picture is the pilot house off of the sternwheeler RESCUE.
