According to Henry County, Tennessee marriage records he married Tennie (Tennessee) Phillips on June 19, 1890. They moved from Paris, TN too Paducah, KY sometime around 1901 and lived at 1026 North 10th St, 925 Burnett St. and 1111 Burnett St. Clayton died of pneumonia on February 26, 1937 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah. Mary Wheeler notes in her book Steamboatin' Days, that after working on the river Mr. Riley became a preacher. He appears in Steamboatin' Days on pages 67-72 and is responsible for the songs I Come Up Out uv Egypt, Red Sea, and Gabriel's Trumpet.
