BAKER (Way #T0014), a sternwheel towboat with a wooden hull(125.8 x 28 x 5) was originally named the DAN O' SULLIVAN before being built at Mound City, IL in 1923. The DAN O' SULLIVAN had a long history coming from the boats HOPE, GATE CITY, COUGLAS HALL, and H.P. FLESHER, dating back to 1868. When bought by the Ayer & Lord Tie Company the DAN O' SULLIVAN was renamed in honor of Miss Annie I. Baker, an associate of the company. According to the front page of the Paducah Sun Democrat, Wednesday evening, July 15, 1931, Anna I. Baker was born in Abilene, KS to Henry and Nancy Baker and completed school at Baird College, in Clinton, MO. in 1899 Miss Baker moved from Joplin, MO to Paducah to aid her father Mr. Henry Baker, then transportation manager of the Ayer & Lord Tie Company. She became a leading lady in Paducah both through her work with the Ayer & Lord Tie Company and through her civic activities. She was secretary of the Paducah zoning and planing commission, first president of Paducah's Business and Professional Woman's Club, a member of First Presbyterian church, and a generous contributor to the charities of the city. She passed away at the I.C. Railroad Hospital in Paducah on July 15, 1931. Her life left quite and impression and the A. I. BAKER served as a reminder to all. The A. I. BAKER was sold to Lea River Lines in 1943 and would soon sink near Mound City, IL. Notable Captians of the A.I. BAKER include Capt. Nelson Broadfoot (1935), Capt. Hugh T. Crouse (1939) and Capt. Frank Springer (1942).
