From the authors Diane Kipplen
& Victor Tavera - The purpose of this book is to document the burials at the McCracken County,
Kentucky, “County Cemetery." During our research, we encountered confusion and struggled
to find clear information about the cemetery's history. We discovered a burial index on
FamilySearch, which provided some details about burials starting in 1908. However, the
markers at the cemetery entrance indicated that they dated back to 1855, leaving us puzzled.
Further investigation led us to an "Old County Cemetery" mentioned in historical
newspapers. We wanted to ensure accurate documentation, so we investigated this
reference. The "Old" County Cemetery was located in "Mechanicsburg" on Mill Street, on the
south side of what is now part of the city limits. Newspapers consistently described the new
county cemetery as a separate and entirely different site. They mentioned that a map of the
cemetery and a list of burials would be available, but we were unable to find or view a listing.
Frustrated by the lack of official information available to us, we decided to create our
own list. While this list may contain errors and omissions, it includes all the individuals we
were able to find through our research, given the absence of an official listing. Since the
cemetery was segregated and burials were likely conducted in a specific order, we have
organized the list chronologically by burial date.
Most of the markers have been destroyed or graves are unmarked, so we hope this
list provides future researchers with a starting point to locate their loved ones' graves.
Additionally, we have included information on unidentified individuals in the hope that it might
assist families still searching for them. Unfortunately, we were unable to find public records
beyond newspapers and death certificates for these individuals.
This compilation represents our best efforts, and we hope it proves helpful. Any burials
found as “County Cemetery” before 1908 will be published separately.
