Former Livingston County Sheriff and Clerk, Gabriel McCandless was born to Jessie James McCandless and Lake Foster, June 24, 1908. He married Grace Strong in 1941. He died on November 25, 1998 in Smithland.
Description:
Mr. McCandless recalls the 1935 hanging of Willie Deboe, which is believed to have been the last official hanging in Kentucky. He comments on the escape from Eddyville Prison by "Red" Davenport and his death by gunfire and remembers the newsman Henry Ward and his article in the Paducah Sun newspaper.
